The historical centre of Pomarance contains several different interesting archaeological and cultural sites, the recently restored Romanesque church can be seen from the beginning of via Mascagni, a few metres from the church is an Etruscan tomb in excellent condition which can be visited. Continuing along via Roncalli you will find the Bicocchi Museum and the permanent display “Artigiani e Guerrieri” “Craftsman and Warriors” hosted at Palazzo Ricci. Patrimony of Pomarance is however without doubt the great variety of landscapes in the territory; the woods, the river Cecina, the numerous roads that lead to villages and fortifications that seem to have stopped in time. Among these in particular is the Rocca Sillana which has been recently restored and awaits visitors, putting them to the test from high up, imposing and yet giving, once reached, a spectacular view of Tuscany.
It was at Larderello, a neighbouring town sharing the same council as Pomarance that more than one hundred years ago steam began to be used as a source of energy to produce electricity. Today the small town, in “the warm heart of Tuscany”, is considered to be the most important geothermal centre in the world. The territory of Larderello is characterised by an unmistakeable industrialized landscape with twin geothermal cooling towers, steam ducts and natural emissions of underground steam. Inside the Enel plant is a recently unveiled Geothermal Museum which is without doubt the most technological and important museum of industrial archaeology ever realised before now on the argument.
2166 hectares of mainly forest situated north of the Monterufoli Reserve characterised by Monte Soldano and bordered by the Cecina river, the Sellate river and the Fosci river in the south-east, from the confines with the province of Siena to the east and from the Macchia di Tatti in the north. The conifer wood of Tatti is of great naturalistic interest, a natural habitat for many species of wild animals. A must to visit is the Bishop’s Castle, one of the most important medieval settlements in the whole of the territory of Volterra.
